For this exercise, I'm going to compare the premium range.
Caltex Vortex 98 vs Shell V-Power 98 vs BP Ultimate 98 vs United 98
After further research and own experience, I noticed that Caltex Vortex 98 is the worst performing out of all. It lacks power and tend to consume more.
Shell V-Power 98 and United 98 performs a lot better.
However, the clear winner is BP ultimate - the car drives really well, you can fell the power is there and the fuel seems to last longer.
9/10 netizens seems to choose BP Ultimate as their first choice of 98 octane premium fuel. Noted that it does depend on the car as well and some cars may react differently.
If you read the MSDS sheets for each fuel, BP Ultimate 98 and United 98 is the cleanest being no additives making it 98-100% pure gasoline. MSDS sheet is a fact sheet required by Workplace Health and Safety. It shows the ingredients of the item and it's properties.
1. BP Ultimate 98 (Petrol 8006-61-9 100%)
2. United Premium 98 (Petrol 86290-81-5 99-100%)
3. Caltex Vortex 98 (Gasoline 8006-61-9 90-100% Benzene 71-43-2 0.1% - 1%) - it doesn't add up to 100% which they quote the balance is "Ingredients determined to be non-hazardous".
4. Shell V-Power 98 (Gasoline 86290- 81- 5 90- 100 % Benzene 71- 43- 2 <=1 %) - it consists of other complex mixture of hydrocarbons consisting of paraffins, cycloparaffins, aromatic and olefinic hydrocarbons (including benzene at 1.0%v/v maximum), with carbon numbers predominantly in the C4 to C12 range. May also contain several additives at <0.1% v/v each.
This exercise is to compare the brand through the 98 fuel range. If you are looking for an answer to the best Unleaded 91 in Australia. I would assume your preference is value rather than performance. In that case, I guess both Shell and BP wouldn't make much difference. But I would still stay away from Caltex, as in the past when I tried Caltex on my car, I didn't really enjoy it. As for United, there are not a lot of United petrol station compared to Shell, BP and Caltex. So my say - stick with the cheapest (usually Shell) and the most convenient.
Personally, at the moment I'm using Shell due to availability of the petrol stations around my area and discount voucher from Coles Supermarket.

When you fill up your car, there are couple of options for you to choose from on which reward points you want to earn. Rule of thumb is to focus on 1 reward point. So if you want to earn Velocity points, go with BP. Caltex to earn Woolworths Points which is convertible to Qantas points or Shell to earn flybuys points which can be redeemed as $ or to be transferred to Etihad points.
To know which will give the most value, I am going to compare BP (Velocity) vs Shell (Flybuys) vs Caltex (Woolworhts).
For this exercise, I am going to calculate the required point and $ to redeem Business Class flight on Qantas or Virgin Australia between Melbourne and Sydney.
Again, the clear winner is BP with Velocity points. With Flybuys, if you redeem it as $, it will be $10 for every 200 points. So if you spend $69,000 as per table above, you will get 34,500 flybuys points which equal to $172.5 - it's not worth since domestic business class flight is much more expensive. Though, I have always redeemed flybuys points to $.
In conclusion, if you are looking for performance BP Ultimate is your choice, otherwise, stick with Shell for value and decent quality. From my experience, Shell tend to be cheaper by couple of cents most of the time. On the other hand if you incorporate reward system into your calculation, BP will get you to your next holiday destination 4 times faster than Caltex and 7.5 times faster than Shell.
